Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery is needed when jaws don't meet correctly and/or teeth don't seem to "fit" with your jaws. Teeth are straightened with orthodontics, and then corrective jaw surgery repositions misaligned jaws. This not only improves facial appearance, but also ensures that teeth meet correctly and function properly. Combined Orthodontics and oral and maxillofacial surgery allows for repositioning of teeth and facial bones to create a more balanced appearance, with jaws that work well together.

Who needs Orthognathic Surgery?

People who can benefit from orthognathic surgery include those with an improper bite or jaws that are positioned incorrectly (types of Occlusion). Jaw growth is a gradual process, and in some instances, the upper and lower jaws may grow at different rates. The result can be a host of problems that can affect chewing function, speech, long-term oral health, and appearance. Injury to the jaw and birth defects can also affect jaw alignment. While orthodontics alone can correct many bite problems if only the teeth are involved, orthognathic surgery may be required if the jaws also need repositioning.

Is Orthognathic Surgery for you?
Do you have difficulty in chewing or biting?
Have you noticed increased wear on your teeth?
Do you like your appearance from the front?
Do you like your appearance from the side?
Do you have a protruding jaw or no chin?
Do you have an open bite?
Any of these can exist at birth or be acquired after birth as a result of hereditary, environmental influences or trauma to the face.

A consultation will be arranged with the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who will also perform a complete examination. Together the Orthodontist and the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon will help you to make the choices that are best for your overall oral health and facial beauty.
